Space Traveler Discloses Depression In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
