The star has donated the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which works to save the Britain's small music venues.

The star was presented with the award on mid-October as his third album his work was chosen as the best record of the last 12 months.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages played in his initial steps.

"As an artist would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the shows I played around the area, and further afield, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These spaces are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by adding a small levy to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his live tour to assist numerous grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds supported spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to issues arising from floods, blazes and personal losses, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations obtained monetary aid in improving amenities and technical equipment that helped musicians and audiences.

"The idea that revenue from performances in large arenas helps the smaller venues, where it all starts for performers like me, is just logical," Fender has commented.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked better apparatus," the artist shared with outlets.

Previously, the band gave their prize money to the community center that developed their act, alongside other local music groups.

And 1994 winners the group contributed their prize to a MS organization after a acquaintance was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," remarked artist Heather Small. "The money was the bonus but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our winning impacted another person's life."

In the past week, the trust revealed it had rescued several grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The first in the city and the other in that location were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who buy "stakes" in the venues.
