Administration Reveals Federal Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week

The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been recalled to execute staff reductions.

An analysis argued that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since funding expired at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
